I’m Back!

After a slight layoff of almost five years, I’m back to posting. I’ve been gaming (and painting) Anyway, here are some pics from our battle from last weekend, around 1700 points of Iron Hands and Blood Angels beat the snot out of roughly the same amount of Orks!

No battle report this time, however.

But expect more to come!

Or not, hell maybe I’m lying and this is it!

World War 2!!

Yeah, so it’s been a while since I’ve posted.

I’ve been painting like mad, BUT setting up the camera and lights are such a pain in the ass!

So I’m lazy, sue me.

I’ve taken a bit of a break from Games Workshop stuff in order to concentrate on getting my 28mm Late War Americans and Germans into fighting shape.

Crusader Miniatures Americans

I have a lot of Early War French and Germans painted up, maybe I’ll get around to posting them.

Maybe.

Battle Honors .30 cal MG team

Some of these Battle Honors guys have been kicking around for 20 years or so!

I really like Battle Honors miniatures, although they’re a little on the small side, being 25mm or so. I find that they fit in well enough with other ranges, however. The fact that they have no pictures for half of their stuff on their website is a problem that I’m sure keeps a lot of people away, but they really are decent figs!

Here’s a medley of Battle Honors G.I.s:

I’m not a huge fan of West Wind (Berlin or Bust) miniatures, but painted up they look decent enough:

For Late War vehicles, I have mostly Bolt Action stuff from Warlord Games.

The same goes for my German vehicles, more Bolt Action:

I have a ton more to paint, mostly Sherman and Panther tanks, but a handful of Infantry as well. We’re gearing up for a big game of Disposable Heroes using Skirmish Campaigns for the scenarios.

That means we’ll have a battle report, at some point!

Warhammer Quest!

After spending a year painting Blood Angels and Space Orks, I’ve finally decided to jump back into something else, namely Warhammer Quest. Specifically, WHQ Silver Tower!

images

Not the glory days, but still glorious!

Back in 1990 I picked up Advanced Heroquest, expecting many, many hours of monster-bashing fun…but it never quite delivered. I really loved everything about it, but I could never seem to get a campaign of it off of the ground. I’ve played it a fair number of times, sure, but not as much as say Space Hulk or even Talisman.

I never owned WHQ though, until perhaps 5 years ago, when I managed to pick up two copies on Ebay for a ridiculously low price.

P1030543

Two copies, plus Lair of the Ork Lord & Catacombs of Terror for under $300?? Hell yeah!

download

THIS is the magic I was missing!

Now HERE was a game!

Everything that AHQ was lacking and then some!

Naturally, when Silver Tower came out, I had to jump on top of it (and later on, Shadows Over Hammerhal)

P1030545

The ever-growing mountain of shit games! Yes, I own everything for Tide of Iron too!

Anyhow, I’ve needed a break from 40k, so I started knocking out the Silver Tower miniatures.

First the heroes:

…and the monsters:

I’ve been working on these suckers ever since Christmas, I think. Only the Gaunt Summoner and Ogroid Thaumaturge left to go, then Silver Tower is done! (which is more than I can say for my AHQ miniatures)

P1030542 (1)

Pink Horrors, ready to dance their asses off!

Whenever the last two are done, I’m switching it up again to WW2 miniatures.

I know the original purpose behind this blog was to chronicle the painting of the Blood Angels army, and I’ll still work on that, but man, I need a break from painting 40k miniatures!

Mephiston, Lord of Death! (and pals)

P1030390

I’m just here to kick ass. Nevermind the bubblegum.

When I sorted through all of the Blood Angel miniatures that I got from the Fallen Gamer’s estate sale, I quickly found that I had acquired all of the characters, minus Tycho.

And let’s be honest, you really need TWO versions of that guy.

The first one that I decided to get out of the way was good ol’ Mephiston. Being as Close Combat is apparently gonna be a thing in 8th edition, I have high hopes for this Sonofabitch.

Now, he’s probably going to be running around with the Death Company, but in case not, and also just because, I went ahead and painted up the Sternguard Veterans that I had sitting in the miniature case of holding.

P1030395

Aaaagh! Leggo of me, giant! Oh wait…no fear…no fear…

I have these same guys painted up with my Crimson Fist army, but I kinda like the newbies better. But that’s more than likely just the ‘New Miniature Factor’ talking.

Overpriced, yes. Cool as shit looking, yes again. To be perfectly honest, I almost never, ever run Sternguard (or Vanguard) marines. But hey, I’ve got ’em, so I might as well paint ’em right?

Finally, here’s the next unit on the painting block, JUMP MARINES!

P1030400

“Might as well…”

Devastators: Done!

I finally got these suckers knocked out!

P1030393

We are ready to mow some (lightly armoured) shit down!

I still have another devastator squad left to paint, but that one is armed with more reasonable things, like Lascannons and Missile Launchers, as opposed to simply ork killers  Imperial Guard killers  Astra Milti  Heavy Bolters.

Actually, I’ve been a busy little bee painting away getting ready for 8th edition!

By the Emperor’s Teeth, it looks glorious!

And even better, it doesn’t look like a Byzantine mess of a rule system. Hell, it actually looks…dare I say it…fun?

But man, I’ll be damned if I ditch my hundreds and hundreds of Space Marines for those damn Primaris Marines!

They’re so tall, though…

Next up, some Command units!

Tactical Squad one is ready!

p1030345

p1030346

This flock looks like shag carpet! Whatever, for the Emperor!

Two units down, eleventy-billion to go!

I will admit that working with the black-primer miniatures was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Those Citadel base colors really do their job!

The basing flock was from the original owner’s collection, and that’s what the other painted miniatures were based with, so I’ve stuck with it.

It looks better in person than in pictures, actually.

So next up will be…

DEATH COMPANY!

The battle: Round one!

p1030314

Is that big bastard out of range?

It seems that every time my buddy Andy and I play for 40k, he sets up and shoots first.

It seems that way because it’s the truth.

By some miracle, I somehow won the first turn, and by an even greater miracle, he did not seize the initiative.

I piled all of my squads into the ruined buildings at the back end of my side of the table, and he did pretty much the same on his side.

Crimson Fists:

Everyone stayed put except for my Landspeeders, which worked their way up the flank and ducked behind a ruined building.

Tactical squad One shot at the Knight with a Lascannon and missed. Tac squad Two shot at a predator with a Lascannon…and missed.

The Lascannon Devastators were too far away to do anything to anything, except maybe shout “For the Emperor!” or some such.

The Missile Launcher Devastators fired with pin-point accuracy on his scouts hiding in a building, direct hitting four times!

For all of that, only one lousy scout died.

p1030319

Here come the bikers with their Cheese Grav Guns!

Iron Hands:

His Knight, Rhino, Predators, and bikers advanced.

The Knight fires the battle cannon at Tac squad Two, wastes four marines and damages  two of my Landspeeders. He split-fires the Heavy Stubber at Tac squad One and gets nothing.

The bikers then shoot Tac squad One with Gravguns and kill two of them.

The Thunderfire cannon destroys my two damaged Landspeeders, and then his scouts return fire at my ML Devastators but do no harm.

The Master of the Forge ponders the nature of the Machine Spirit and does nothing. (He forgot about him)

Round two!

p1030325

Here we are, fresh from Hell! Say, is that a Thunderfire Cannon over there?

Crimson Fists:

One Squad of Legion of the Damned Deep Strikes in, the other one gets delayed.

They promptly melt the Thunderfire cannon, but somehow the gunner survives.

The surviving Landspeeder moves out into the open, because screw it. It shoots at the Rhino carrying his Sternguard Veterans…and does nothing. The ML Devastators shoot one of his Predators into a pile of Junk, whilst everyone else misses.

Well, the LC Devastators hit the Knight, but his shields held, so that’s basically the same as missing.

p1030323p1030328

Iron Hands:

The Bikers redeploy to face the Legion of the Damned who have materialized to their rear.

The bikers kill 3 Legion squad members, because I can’t roll an invulnerable 3++ save for shit.

His tac squad in the ruined building where the Thunderfire cannon used to be unload on the Legion from a few floors up…and do nothing.

The Knight moves up and unloads everything at the LC Devastators, killing two non-heavy weapon marines.

His scouts kill two ML Devastators, one of them being an actual missile launcher marine!

His Sternguard shoot at the Landspeeder from the safety of their Rhino, and somehow miss the thing.

The Master of the Forge shoots at the ML Devastators and misses.

In the assault phase, the Knight charges Tac squad One, and kills the shit out of three marines…but then he’s locked in close combat!

p1030326p1030329

Round Three!

p1030330

Hey Lucius, did you hear the laughter of thirsting Gods just now?

Crimson Fists:

The second Legion of the Damned squad finally shows up, shoots at the bikers and fails to do any damage.

The Landspeeder shoots its Multimelta at the Sternguard Rhino…and again comes up empty!

Tac squad two on the other hand finally pop open the Rhino like the tin can that it is and kill one of the Sternguard in the resulting explosion. Thank the Emperor for Lascannons!

The ML Devastators obliterate two more Sternguard, while the LC Devastators fry one of the bikers.

The Legion of the Damned, both squads, fail to dispatch anything whatsoever.

The Terminators, led by the Librarian (who can’t hurt the thing) charge the Knight and do two HP worth of damage!

p1030333

Whaddya mean we can only hit the front armor? We’re looking at this thing’s asshole!

Iron Hands:

Predator number two backs up and turns to face squad two of the Legion, shoots and misses.

The Sternguard pile into some nearby ruins away from the destroyed Rhino, shoot wildly at the ML Devastators and miss.

The scouts shoot at the same squad and hit, but the Power armor saves! His Tac squad unload on Legion squad two and kill two. The bikers do exactly the same thing.

The Master of the Forge shoots at ML Devastators and misses (again)

The Techmarine gunner charges Legion squad one…and is ripped to pieces.

The Knight stomps a couple of terminators into a fine Ceramite paste.

p1030332p1030331

Round Four, the final round!

p1030334

These dead guys, how tough can they really be?

Crimson Fists:

The Landspeeder finally does something! It flies over to Predator two and gets a glancing hit, taking off a hull point! Money well spent! (right)

Unimpressed by this, Legion squad two turns towards Predator two and melts it into slag.

Mildly impressed by this, Legion squad one frags four more of his tactical marines in the building they’ve been fighting over.

Both Devastator squads fail to damage anything that they shoot at, and all of the Terminators (except the Librarian) die horribly in close combat, but they do manage to knock off two more hull points from the Knight for a total of four.

That is where we called the game on account of time. It was still anyone’s game at that point, as the Iron Hands had yet to go.

Woo! Next game will be 2000 points of Blood Angels vs Orks!

Whenever I get enough BA stuff painted, at any rate.

On the painting front, the first Tactical squad is finished, and now I’m working on a squad of Death company. Pictures to follow next time!

Tactical squad nearly online, sir!

Hoo Boy!

I’m working my way deeper into the mound of miniatures, and now I’m close to finishing Tactical squad number one (of three)

finished

Ready for action!

It seems that Citadel Paints Mephiston Red really does the trick for tackling black primer; at least it’s working for me. Now what do I do about yellow when I get to the assault marines? (for their helmets!)

I’m certainly no Golden Demon award winner, but like I said, i can at least do a decent tabletop standard. Here’s the rest of the lads:

halfway-there

We’ll fight so much better once we’re properly based!

I stumbled across some Nuln Oil gloss wash, and thought I’d give it a try. Results are…meh.

shiny

You say shiny, I say oiled and ready for action! Wait a second…

NEXT time will be the battle report of the Crimson Fist marines vs the Iron hands!

Maybe.

It’s a lot of writing, and I’m somewhat lazy…

First Squad, we’re going in!

line-up

Have Lightning Claws, will travel. And then kill things when we get there.

Alright! The first unit is officially finished!

Well, except for the protective coat.

But you’d never know that if I didn’t just tell you, right?

Man, I really love painting Terminators! So much open space to work with! And guys armed with Lightning Claws?

Hell, that hardly takes any effort at all!

Altogether, I think we’re off to a fine start here.

I guess this means I have to start on the second unit, though. (This whole blog idea will be pretty short-lived if I don’t)

Next on the painting block will be…

Tactical Marines!

new-meat

Sure, we’re basic troops, but Goddamn we kick ass!

I was kind of torn here, to be honest, because normally I prime white, not black, and I was thinking about stripping and re-priming these suckers.

The main problem with that is my paint-stripper of choice, Goof-Off, will eat the plastic like it was nothing, and as those arms and bolt-guns are plastic…bad idea.

The other option was to just spray white primer over the black, but that covers up detail, so I’m gonna bite the bullet and paint over black.

We’ll see how that goes.

Next time will be a primer on primer!
